17 winners of the Matsui Scholarship award for 2008 have been announced by the Matsui Foundation.
The Matsui Scholarship, which is founded by the Matsui foundation, was setup to give financial awards to high school seniors who are graduating. These students, who must be going through financial hardship, must present the qualities and the abilities to be successful in college.
The students below represent the winners of the Matsui Scholarship. Each Scholarship equals out to $40,000 and is disbursed yearly installments across a 4 year period.

An $18 million dollar government grant, which is aimed at assisting high school students from the state of Oregon rural areas to attend college, was granted to the Oregon University System.
The Gear Up grant is aimed at helping low income high school students from at least 12 different school territories.
The Gear Up grant will do at least 3 things:
1. It will endorse teachers’ growth and development.
2. Aid high school students in getting ready for the collegiums level.
3. Offer over $9 million dollars in awarded scholarship financial support for eligible high school students.
High school students, who are qualified for the Gear Up grant, are the students who attend state-supported school in Sweet Home, Aurora, Stanfield, Brookings, Myrtle Creek-Canyonville, Cottage Grove, Glendale, Lost River, Grants Pass, Lincoln City, Irrigon and La Pine.

The Women’s Opportunity Awards program, which is a part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, has been giving many women scholarships to discover their dreams.
They give out grants to women who are looking to improve their position in the work force by acquiring additional skills and education.
Started back in 1972, the Women’s Opportunity Awards has given out $25 million in scholarships to assist women by the thousands by helping them to accomplish their ambitions.
If you are propelled to accomplishing your career and educational goals, this is the college scholarship for you. To be eligible for the Women’s Opportunity Award, you must be:
1. Female
2. Head of household with the main responsibility financially of supporting your household (including spouse, parents and children).
3. Have been admitted or accepted to a vocational training program, an undergraduate program or you must be currently attending a college or university.
4. A financial need must be proved.

In the state of Minnesota, the number of high school students that has taken Advanced Placement tests and acquire high test which will make them eligible for college credits, has increased in 2008.
A 6 percent jump in percentage was published by the Education Department of Minnesota along with the Minnesota office of high education. These tests are usually administered toward the end of the advance placement course so that students can be qualified for college credit when they attend college.
During the 2007- 2008 academic year, 27,605 tests were administered which equaled out to 44,281 combined areas subject exams.
Even the test scores were moderately up with an increase of 8 percent. This percentage allowed about 28,138 tests to be accepted as college credit by colleges and universities.
The reason for this explosion in number is due to The Get Ready Get Credit Program. This program, which was pushed by Gov, Pawlenty, got the approval by the Legislature back in 2005.
It is setup to encourage high school students to obtain college credits while they are in high school by taking AP courses and additional programs. Minority students also participated and were successful also.
As a result of the program, when the Class of 2008 took the SAT, the students scored higher than the national average.
Statistics show that for 2 years in a row, the SAT scores continue to stay low according to and base on the record number of high school pupils that take the test. In 2008, there were 1.52 million students who took the SAT test and that number was up slightly up from the previous year. Statistics also show that over the last decade there has been a 30% increase of students that took the SAT test.
